This book was a required reading in our Nutrition Counseling class and I’m really thankful for that. The book follows the story of a Hmong child named Lia Lee who has a seizure disorder. They reside in Merced, California and are a long way from their roots. Throughout the story you discover the culture barriers and attitudes from American doctors towards the Hmong.
Every person who works with those of different culture should read this, especially in the medical field. It applies in every field though because I’m sure just in daily life, you meet someone that may be a lot different than you. Different values, beliefs and culture can be a huge barrier in communication. But it doesn’t have to be. This is a great book and definitely recommended.

Very interesting book and I believe anyone going into the healthcare field should read this book. Some chapters are really dry because it goes into the Hmong history and things such as war, and that doesn’t interest me. However, there were only a few of those chapters and the others were quick reads. Definitely has opened my eyes when having to communicate with those of a different culture, especially for my future in dietetics.
I have three books I have started reading since Summer, but was really intrigued by reviews of “Girls in White Dresses.” So I have started that two days ago and am almost half way through it. Keep checking back for that review!

So, since I have gotten my Kindle Fire a few months ago, I have been reading more. I try to read at least a couple of pages before bed each night, since I have been really busy with school. I love when I have time to read more than just a couple minutes, but that is rare. Thankfully summer is coming up!!!! WAHOO!
Anyway, I just finished Always the Baker, Never the Bride by Sandra D. Bricker. I saw this book as one of the daily kindle deals and it was free along with the third book in the series.

I was pulled in by the story of a baker who is diabetic. Not only have I loved baking for many years now, but I thought it would be a great story since she cannot eat much of her own creations. This book didn’t take me very long to read. This was my reading progress according to my Goodreads.
