If you’ve been following me on instagram, twitter or facebook, then you are aware that I’m back up and running (literally,) and excited for my half marathon training. I will be running the Roots n Blues half marathon in Columbia, MO in September and racing the Rock n Roll St. Louis half marathon in October.
I have already ran the Rock n Roll Nashville and Rock n Roll Chicago half marathon this year, which I plan to review and have a post for you all. Today, however, I want to talk about my new partnership with Girls on the Run. Now that I run for myself, I want to dedicate my running to an organization that I feel is extremely important. I have always been a fan of Girls on the Run and what they stand for, therefore wanted to fund raise for them!
Girls on the Run helps girls from 3rd-8th grade help gain a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. They are able to see the role of a team and healthy relationships while exploring how they can positively connect with and shape the world. These girls are inspired to take charge of their lives and define their future on their terms.
Over the course of the program, the girls will develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to the community and society.
After 12 weeks and 24 lessons, the girls embark on a 5k (3.1 miles) together. I truly don’t know of a greater way to teach life lessons and inspire physical activity. One thing I have learned at Mizzou is “Winning Kids with Sport.” That the child comes first and you help develop them and instill values and life skills in them and their best will then develop a great athlete. Physical activity is a great outlet to help build these values and life skills and I love that Girls on the Run uses this as their foundation.
I have set a goal of $150.00 to raise for Girls on the Run before my race October 19th, 2014. I would be so grateful for those of you who would be so willing to donate to such a wonderful cause and help not only support my running, but give these girls more options to thrive by continuing to support the Girls on the Run organization.
