You Wanted To Know: Cross Training/Non Running Sports

Well if you’ve been reading you have noticed that I was injured for over a month or so.

Some cross training I did was:elliptical

Elliptical

Aqua Jog

Spin Bike

The only one I even enjoyed was aqua jogging. Why?

Elliptical is plain boring.

  1. It’s a tease.
  2. It’s the closest thing to running but yet you can’t and it doesn’t even feel the same.
  3. Time seems to go by so slow when on the elliptical.
  4. You can’t even read or do anything to pass the time because you have to have your hands on the bars.

Spin Bike hurts your butt.

If that isn’t good enough then:

  1. The seat is uncomfortable.
  2. When adjusting the height, I still can’t get comfortable.
  3. If I lean forward it hurts even more.

Aqua Jogging is fun.

  1. Friends don’t mind coming to the pool to join you.
  2. I get to use a belt because I can’t stay afloat in the deep end. (it’s a fear, leave me alone) image
  3. It reminds me of running, but no pounding.
  4. There are a lot more people to people watch at the pool.
  5. You can actually hear the music.
  6. You don’t sweat because the water is cold. +++++

However Aqua Jogging has a big negative to it: Doesn’t get my heart rate up enough. Sad smile FAIL

Some cross training activities I enjoy doing nonetheless:

  • Biking on the road bike (only on flat trails with no cars, yes I know it’s a ROAD bike, but I’m not comfortable with cars yet)
  • TAE-BO with BIlly Blanks for sure. I fell in love with Tae-Bo in middle school. (I haven’t done it for a long time)
  • Cardio Workouts (my teacher has us do cardio workout circuits in class and they get your heart rate up and make you work)

Some sports I enjoy playing:

  • Soccer
  • Knock Out/Just shooting hoops with the basketball
  • ULTIMATE FRISBEE (my favorite activity ever!)
  • Bowling (does that count? I Red heart to bowl)
  • Racquetball!!! (My new found love)

So those are some of my favorite cross training activities and sports to play!!

I Love Running, I Hate Running, I Love Running

Running and I have a weird relationship.

When I’m injured and not able to run or get time off and am not supposed to run, I hate it. I wish to be running.

But when I’m allowed back, I wish I wasn’t running. Why, you might ask? Because running feels like a chore when you are motivating yourself.

I realized this within the past week of getting back into running. My team is what pumps me up in the morning to get to practice. I love waking up and running because they are there and running is so much more fun with others.

So let’s talk about my running plans of action, shall we? Since this is a running blog and I think I tend to post more about the food I eat than about my running/active lifestyle and I really hate that.

Last week

I was cleared to start running 1 mile with cross training. Here’s how my week went:

Monday – 30 minutes on spin bike
Tuesday – not cleared to run until Wednesday, but played knock out and shot hoops with the team
Wednesday – 1 mile in jogging class @ 7:30 pace
Thursday – played intense game of soccer with some teammates
Friday – 1 mile in 8:26, more basketball
Saturday – off day
Sunday – 1 mile not clocked, 25 minutes elliptical, ~1 hour playing racquetball

This Week

This week I am cleared to run 2 miles. So today I ran 2 miles for a time trial in my jogging class and ran 14:30 @ 7:15 pace.

If everything goes well I will be able to start on the training plan for next week.

It seems crazy to just be running 1 and 2 milers but the legs need to slowly get back into it.

So I’m going to take every precaution to train well and to train smart.

I’m not sure I’m going to post my daily food anymore. It’s just not very exciting and that’s not the blog I want to become and that’s what it was turning into.

Thoughts?

Besides the “You Wanted to Know” series, what blog posts would you look forward to me doing?

I’ll definitely have recipes once I start cooking for myself/get out of the dorms.

Maybe you want to know more about my daily life? The things I do instead of the things I eat.

I wish my legs would get better.

Some food.

My days have run together and I have forgotten when I ate these.

Onto the running…or not running.

Wednesday

Well I was supposed to have a midweek long run. However I saw a doctor the day before and she thinks I might have stress fractures in my legs and said “Only run if you have to” But the only way to know if I do or not is to have a bone scan. But if I got the bone scan done now and I did have fractures then I wouldn’t be able to run. So we decided we would wait to have the bone scan until after conference. So I am taking some meds called Mobic right now to see if it helps the pain.

It really dries you out for sure. Like lips and mouth. So I’ve been hydrating like crazy

Which brings me to another topic. NCAA drug testing!!

Yes, I got randomly chosen. This was not your typical go into a room where the toilet water is blue and the sink is disabled etc.

You took your cup in its plastic into a locker room. Washed your hands, then take the cup out of the plastic. You then walk into a stall and the lady says “okay, go ahead and pee. I have to hold the door open and watch you.” HAHA

Then if you still have to pee more she says “put the cup on the ground and then finish, I’ll close the door”

Yeah how fun.

So all in all, with my legs and no time to get in my midweek, I aqua jogged for 70 minutes which is about equivalent to 7.8 miles running.

Thursday

Today, I did elliptical since I can’t swim so I have to aqua jog using a belt and that doesn’t get your heart rate up as good. So I hopped on the elliptical for 42 minutes to be about 5 miles of running. I hate elliptical a lot. It also hurt my legs too, so I guess I’ll try biking to cross train next time.

I get to run workouts and long runs, the other days I cross train by myself which is so boring. :(

Hope all is well. I won’t be blogging for a few days. I’ve got a busy schedule coming up.

*Going home
*Watching a high school cross race friday
*Driving back to school in the morning
*Watching high school cross race saturday
*Football game
*Chemistry thing
*Long Run Sunday
